Guidance & accountability

Academic Mentorship

A personal mentor who keeps students on track: goals, accountability, study skills, confidence and direction, with parents kept in the loop the whole way.

What it is

Tutoring fixes a subject. Mentorship fixes how a student works.

Most students do not underperform because they lack ability. They underperform because nobody has taught them how to set goals, plan their study, hold themselves accountable and keep going when motivation dips. Academic Mentorship pairs each student with a mentor who builds exactly those skills.

The program runs on a weekly rhythm of check-ins, planning and honest feedback, and it works alongside school or any of our tutoring programs. It is the support layer that keeps everything else on track, and it is a big part of how our 2025 students all finished above a 90 ATAR.

What mentorship covers

Eight things your child gets from a TopMark mentor.

1

Personal goal setting

Students work towards long-term goals, not just passing the next test.

  • Academic goals set at the start of each term
  • A personalised study plan to reach them
  • Progress tracked over time, not guessed
  • Habits that lead to consistent improvement
2

Accountability

The engine of the program. A mentor makes sure the plan actually happens.

  • Weekly check-ins with the mentor
  • Homework accountability
  • Study reminders through the week
  • Staying on track between lessons
  • Consistency encouraged week after week
3

Study skills

Most students have never actually been taught how to study. We teach it explicitly.

  • Time management and planning
  • Note-taking strategies that work
  • Revision planning across the term
  • Active recall and spaced repetition
  • Exam preparation routines
4

Confidence and mindset

Progress that goes beyond grades, and often comes before them.

  • Building confidence in difficult subjects
  • Reducing exam stress
  • Developing resilience
  • Learning to overcome setbacks
  • Celebrating progress along the way
5

Career and subject guidance

Direction for the decisions that shape senior school and beyond.

  • Choosing Year 11 and 12 subjects
  • University pathways and prerequisites
  • Career discussions and options
  • Long-term goal planning
6

Communication with parents

You always know how your child is going. No guessing, no surprises.

  • Regular progress updates
  • Honest feedback on areas to improve
  • Goals for the month ahead
  • Recommendations for support at home
7

Support outside lessons

Help does not stop when the session ends.

  • Ask questions between sessions
  • Quick homework help when stuck
  • Recommendations for the right resources
  • Study plans in the lead-up to exams
8

Motivation

A mentor keeps students engaged when motivation dips.

  • Regular encouragement
  • Positive reinforcement of good habits
  • Recognition of achievements
  • Support through busy school periods

Who it suits

Mentorship is the right fit when the problem is not one subject.

If the issue is a specific subject, start with Private Tutoring or Subject Mastery. Mentorship is for the patterns underneath the marks.

1Capable students whose results swing up and down with their motivation.
2Students starting Year 11 or 12 who need a plan for the ATAR years.
3Students who study hard but study wrong, and get less than they put in.
4Students aiming high, including UCAT and competitive courses, who need structure to sustain it.
